Genetically modified crops also known as GM crops or Biotech crops has been one of the most heated debates of issues within our society. The debate about the safety, concerns and disadvantages of GM crops have raged since the mid 1990 's but this is due to the lack of knowledge of the general public.Public awareness groups and European environmental agencies have been frequently protesting against genetically modified foods and crops for years, and the latest controversial studies regarding the effects of GM corn pollen on sovereign butterfly caterpillars have prompted the issue of genetic engineering hence bringing it to the front position of public awareness in the United States.Although genetically modified (GM) crops hold good promise in enhancing crop productivity, GM crops face several challenges in agricultural growth, development, and sustainability.
GM crops, also known as genetically modified organisms (here after just GMOs), are expected to be the solution. GM crops have been infused with the genes from other plants and even insects to produce crops that are insect or herbicide resistant, contributing to higher yields per acre.In a meta-analysis, most of the studies showing genetically modified foods in a positive light were noted to have a conflict of interest. The scientific community is concerned about industry restrictions on testing of genetically modified seeds. Also, there is concern that profit may be fueling the adoption of genetically modified crops.
Crops that are genetically modified will create seeds that are genetically modified. Cross-pollination is possible between GMO crops and non-GMO crops as well, even when specified farming practices are followed. Because many of the crops and seeds that produce GMO crops are patented, farmers that aren’t even involved in growing these foods.
